Artist’s Commentary

Kate meets Zandra

‘On the runway’ captures the fashion industry through pencil drawings, spoken word, music, and highly detailed photography of Dame Zandra Rhodes‘ bold prints and colourful patterns.

The work explores how visual art, based on around 150 life drawings of high fashion model Ami Benton, using an array of Re:Fashioned couture looks and poses, can be part of an interactive story.

The challenge was to integrate the vibrant fabrics with the pencil drawings without ‘compromising’ the life drawing. ‘Colouring in’ the figures destroys their fluidity and negative space that simulates light falling on them. With the fabric designs encapsulated in the figures’ silhouetted counterparts the life drawing is preserved.

I composed the spoken word from voice recordings, as Ami reflected on her runway shows, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, The Brit Awards, British Vogue, London and Paris fashion week.

The electroacoustic music created by Maria Sappho draws on the embodied craft of flamenco: its palmas (clapping patterns), voice, and rhythmic insistence, as a feminist history and language of strength and resistance.

Combining moving image techniques and live electronics with traditional artforms and patterns, the work reflects on fashion as both spectacle and labour, tracing the choreography, visibility, and politics of performance.
